Say “hello” to sunny Florida beaches! You’ve packed the kids, coolers and maybe even the grandparents into the car, and the adventure is on! You’re feeling great about your St. Augustine, Florida beach vacation, but once you unpack and claim a spot on the sand reality sets in. Somebody forgot to pack an essential. A quick perusal of the beach shows that you won’t find what you’re looking for. There’s nothing to do but grin and bear it. We hate when that happens, but it doesn’t have to.

This brief list makes a great reminder of the extras that make a beach trip fun and comfortable.

  1. Water, please! Medical experts tell us that each adult needs 64 ounces of water a day, but if you’re playing in the sun, you’ll need more. Steer clear of the sugary sodas. Save some room in the cooler, bring a gallon of water and some water bottles. Keep the water bottles full and cool, pulling them out when someone needs a drink. Water—you’ll be glad you brought it!
  2. Shade. You can handle hours in the sun without worry, but what about the kiddos or the pets? Bring some shelter like a tent or umbrella. Your family will be glad to have some shade on the beach.
  3. A blanket, really? Yep, really. A heavy, oversized blanket is great for lying out, and you can save the beach towels for drying off. The heavier the blanket the less likely you’ll have to spend time chasing it down the sand.
  4. Sprinkle on the baby powder. Hate that sand in your car? We do too, but we’ve got an answer—baby powder. Sprinkle it on sandy feet and watch the sand fall away. Do keep in mind that it doesn’t work so well when your skin is wet.

So pack the floats, sunscreen and paperbacks, but don’t forget these four, too.
